In the 50's and 60's, this painting was based on the poem "Romancing the Tides" from the book "Inside the Head of a Conch Woman" by J.M. Varela. As partly quoted from her book, "... days of hot good looking sailors and fly boys. Fifteen men to every woamn thanks to the U.S. Military..." Every girl's dream!
It is all in the detail. My work is a combination of realism and folk art, showing the laid back and colorful island life in which I was raised. I strive to add energy to my paintings by including people, animals, birds, that are all a part of my Conch upbringing. I not only endeavor to portray my life as a child growing up in Key West, but also the island as it exists today through the eyes of the many people who visit throughout the year. In my latest work, you will see Key West as it was long-ago. In walking the neighborhoods I am reminded of how things once were. I bring my own memories into each piece, lovingly taking the extra time to add details, whether it is a sign on a building that once was, or children playing in the...

This is a true observation of the days when our "hot looking sailors and fly boys" did walk Duval Street, and it truly was "Every girl's dream" I recommend both the artist Linda Cabrera as well as JM Varela, author "Inside the Head of a Conch Woman." Both of these talented and powerful women are born and raised Conchs and know the island well. I'm proud to be their friend and sister and a fan of both their work.
