This was my very first painting, a painting I treasure for more reasons than one. I was taught how to paint by a great Key West artist, Paola Todora and she was by my side when I painted this. She passed away years ago but her memory lives on in this painting and my personal interactions with her. She was also a great friend.
It is all in the detail. My work is a combination of realism and folk art, showing the laid back and colorful island life in which I was raised. I strive to add energy to my paintings by including people, animals, birds, that are all a part of my Conch upbringing. I not only endeavor to portray my life as a child growing up in Key West, but also the island as it exists today through the eyes of the many people who visit throughout the year. In my latest work, you will see Key West as it was long-ago. In walking the neighborhoods I am reminded of how things once were. I bring my own memories into each piece, lovingly taking the extra time to add details, whether it is a sign on a building that once was, or children playing in the...
