Description
Architecturally and historically The Red Doors is one of the Key West waterfronts most picturesque Landmarks. Constructed in late 1868 as a real estate speculation by the Pinder and Curry families of Key West. It has been home to a cigar, factory, a ships chanlery, a grocery and hardware store during the great depression serving both the neighborhood and commercial fishermen and a local hang out bar.
In the early 1950's when shrimping became of real economic importance to Key West The Doors became a chimeras bar and was noted as one of the toughest bars on the Gulf Coast. The gradual decline of the shrimp industry in Key West, due to depletion of fishing grounds and inadequate conservation measures and growing foreign competition lead to the closing of the bar in July 1972.
